Minister Yamaguchi attended the 2nd Japan-Spain Joint Committee on Science and Technology Cooperation in Tokyo.  This Joint Committee is based on the Agreement between the Government of Japan and the Government of Spain on cooperation in science and technology which was signed in September 2010 and aims to discuss activities and outcomes of the of cooperation between both countries.

In the opening remarks, as part of the introduction to Japan’s science, technology and innovation (STI) policy, Minister Yamaguchi made mention of the formulation of “Comprehensive STI  Strategy 2014” and that Japan is targeting on the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games to propel STI and also to showcase innovation to the world.  As regards Japan-Spain relations, he expressed his hope that both countries will deepen the bilateral relationship with a comprehensive and long-term perspective and that regarding STI collaboration in such areas as medical care, renewable energy and infrastructures will advance further.

Prior to the joint committee, Minister Yamaguchi exchanged views on the STI policy and challenges of both countries with Prof. Carmen Vela Olmo, State Secretary for Research, Development and Innovation who co-chaired the joint committee.
