On September 26, Minister Shunichi Yamaguchi, Minister of State for Science and Technology Policy, visited Tsukuba Science City, touring the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, the University of Tsukuba Center for Cybernics Research, and the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization.

At the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, Minister Yamaguchi met with astronaut Satoshi Furukawa, receiving an update on the Japanese “Kibo” experiment module on board the International Space Station. The Minister also visited the control facilities for the quasi-zenith satellite system and the space debris data analysis processing facility, among other locations.

At the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Minister Yamaguchi toured research and development facilities, hearing a report about ongoing research at the Tsukuba Innovation Arena (TIA-nano, a core research facility at the AIST), as well as an explanation of spintronics technology currently under research.

At the University of Tsukuba Center for Cybernics Research, Minister Yamaguchi was briefed on initiatives for Stress-Free Nursing Care through the HAL robot suit and ImPACT.

At the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization, Minister Yamaguchi observed the Strategic Innovation Promotion Program’s agricultural work robots (incorporated in next-generation agriculture, forestry, and fisheries creative technologies) and toured the National Institute of Animal Health advanced research facilities.
