On December 20, 2014, Minister Yamaguchi visited Tokushima University to hold discussions with researchers working in cooperation with local companies. The Minister also planned to observe a university laboratory conducting LED research.

Regarding his visit, Minister Yamaguchi remarked that he was happy to see the degree of academic-industry coordination at the school across a diverse variety of projects. The Minister did note, however, his hopes that the university will work more with local small- and medium-sized businesses in the future.
From an overall perspective of innovation tied directly to lifestyle improvement, the Minister stated that the LED research conducted at Tokushima University might be unique in Japan.
