On 28 September 2015, an executive member of Council for Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Kazuo Kyuma delivered a keynote speech at the International Symposium on Status and Prospects of High Energy Density Science by Giant Lasers, hosted by the Science Council of Japan, held at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the United States.

Dr. Kyuma discussed the remarkable progress in laser technology due to significant improvements in laser energy conversion efficiency and controllability. He stated that high energy density science using lasers promises to lead to the innovations in “monozukuri,” such as the establishment of new manufacturing technologies and the realization of products that offer significantly better performance and cost savings. Dr. Kyuma also introduced two new programs under the leadership of the CSTI, the Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) and the Impulsing Paradigm Change through Disruptive Technologies Program (ImPACT), under which some projects are making use of laser technology.

Dr. Kyuma further expressed his expectation that high energy density science will lead to the creation of new research and industrial applications. He also wished to make an effort to nurture the young researchers and engineers who will lead the next generation.
