Summary

At its 54th session on April 25, the executive members put forward their basic thoughts toward the resource allocation guidelines for FY2007. Further deliberation on the creation of the world's top- class research centers and innovation will be covered at the next session. The resource allocation guidelines will be decided in June.

Active discussion was held as to how to invigorate math and science education. An executive member introduced a foreign textbook on a scientific subject and explained that foreign textbooks are rich in their contents, are advanced, and are engaging. Taking active part in the scientific Olympics to study through such textbooks is a prerequisite, she said. Prime Minister Koizumi expressed his wish to have Japanese students get higher scores in the scientific Olympics.

Prime Minister Koizumi concluded the meeting, saying "Every Ministry has to work hard to realize what is discussed here in this Council meeting in their policy programs and budget."
