The 84th session of the Council for Science and Technology Policy (CSTP) was held at the Prime Minister's Office on September 4, 2009.

At this session, the FIRST Steering Committee reported the evaluation of applicants for the Funding Program for World-Leading Innovative R&D on Science and Technology(FIRST), and as its final decision, the CSTP selected 30 core researchers and their research subjects . The CSTP also decided to start discussing the selection of Operations Support Institutions and the management of the fund for this program.

The CSTP also approved the start of deliberations on the 4th Science and Technology Basic Plan and the revision of the Medium-Term Goals, Medium-Term Plans, etc. for the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science .

The Prime Minister offered words of appreciation for the selection process, stating, “The recipients of the program has been selected in a very transparent and fair manner. I would like to appreciate the committee member’s efforts. ” He also commented, “All core researchers selected for FIRST program are future leading researchers not only of Japan but also of the world. Also, their research would bring a bright future for Japan. I hope that the selected researchers will fully exercise their potential and will conduct their research with confidence and determination. By doing so, I hope they will create a bright future for Japan.”
