Public Opening of the State Guest House, Akasaka Palace

General Information

The Akasaka Palace has been open to the public since 1975 for 10 days a year during a summer period, with a view to enhancing the understanding of the public on the significance of the Palace, as the national facility, playing an important role in the Japanese diplomacy.
As the Palace was registered as a national treasure in 2009, efforts have been made to increase the opportunity to the public to show this invaluable national treasure.
Based on the outcome of the trial opening of a limited period in February, public opening throughout a year avoiding the periods of the visit of foreign dignitaries commences this April. The detail is as follows:

Information

The public opening of the State Guest House, Akasaka Palace will be closed during the period of 26(Fri) August - 7(Wednesday)September due to the visit of foreign dignitaries to Japan.

1.Front Garden (Free Entry)

You can enter through the Front Gate and see the Main Building, but cannot enter the Building itself.
Advance application is not required. No restriction on the maximum number of entrants.

[Opening Information]

Entry Gate: Front Gate
Opening Time: 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. (reception closed at 4:30 P.M.)
Entry Eligibility: None. NO advance application is required.
While anybody is accepted, entrance control may be applied under the circumstances of congestion.
Entry charge: Free

[Advisory Note]

  • No admittance to the Main Building.
  • Under the circumstances of unexpected number of visitors, entry control may be carried out to avoid disorder.
  • For security reasons, metal and baggage check will be conducted at the Front Gate.
  • No car/bicycle park facilities nearby the Palace. Recommend to use public transport.
  • Front Garden is cobbled. Please visit the garden with shoes compatible to cobbled stones.
  • Photo taking is allowed, but large size cameras for business purposes and related equipment such as camera stand is not allowed. Using extendable steel stick for self-portrait is not allowed.
  • Pets are not allowed.
  • Activities prohibited:
    smoking, megaphone use, sign board propaganda, any other activities nuisance to the visitors.
  • Due to sudden scheduling of visit of dignitaries or some other operational reasons, the public opening can be suspended, which will be announced on the home page without delay.
  • Large luggage such as suitcase cannot be brought in.

2.Main Building and Main Garden (Limited number of visitors a day, ticket distribution on the spot or advance application on a first-come basis through web site. Entry charge.)

Enter through the West Gate.
Four(4) Salons used for official ceremonies and the Main Garden located at the south of the Main Building can be visited.
Advance application for a limited number.
But entry tickets will be distributed on the spot to the limited number of visitors.
Once the number of visitors reaches the capacity of a day, the ticket distribution will be terminated.
You have to carry with you a "visit-certificate" sent in advance from the Akasaka Palace, or the entry ticket to be distributed on the spot at the Front Gate.

[Opening Information]

Entry Gate: West Gate
Opening Time: 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. (reception closed at 4:00 P.M.)
Eligible entrants:
  • Those received a "visit-certificate" by having applied in advance through the web site of the Akasaka Palace.
  • Those received entry ticket distributed on the spot at the front gate.
Maximum number of visitors a day: 4,000 persons per day
  • For the cases below from 1. - 3, visiting time is specified to avoid congestion.
  1. Individuals applied a "visit-certificate" in advance through web site and received the "visit-certificate". (Maximum 1500 persons)
    (12:00-, 14:00- For each 750people)

    The application is closed.

  2. Group applied a "visit-certificate" in advance through web site and received the "visit-certificate" (Maximum 1500 persons)
    (13:00-, 15:00- For each 750people)

    The application is closed.

    One group ranging more than 20 and below 50 persons can apply in advance.
    Once you received a "visit-certificate" from us, please send us back a list of participants(Microsoft Excel: 46KB)Open New Window form filled with necessary information.

    Please avoid making tentative and temporary reservations because it becomes troublesome by other eliminating applicants making legitimate reservations.
  3. Those received an entry ticket on the day of a visit at the front gate(Maximum 1000 persons)
    (10:00-, 11:00- For each 500people)
    Please visit at the time specified on the ticket you received.
    Entry tickets will be distributed on a first-come first-serve basis in front of the Front Gate at 8:00 a.m.
    (Timing of the distribution depends on the situation of the queueing.)
Entry charge: Adult: 1000 Yen, Junior high-school and high school students: 500 Yen
(Group: Adult: 800 Yen per person, Junior high-school and high school students:400 Yen)

[Advance application: Application results and notification]

  • We will send you a "visit-certificate" by e-mail once you are granted by one week before the visiting day until 13(Tue)May.After 31(Tue)May,We will spend it by four week before visiting day. Please be advised that sending an application does not automatically grant you a visit.
  • Only one application is valid for each day.
    More than one application by one person to each day will be treated as invalid.
  • After the completion of application process, any change such as the name of applicant cannot be accepted.
    Names which are not listed on a "visit-certificate" will not be accepted including infants.
  • On the day of your visit, ID checking will be conducted at the Gate.
    Please be prepared to show the followings to the officials at the Gate:
    1. A copy of "visit-certificate" e-mailed from "@cao.go.jp"
    2. ID (Passport)
  • In case your application was incomplete or error, the application will be treated as invalid.
  • Personal information received in relation to application.

[Group Application]

  • After you received a "visit-certificate" from us by e-mail, please forward to us by e-mail a list of visitors for registration(Microsoft Excel: 41KB)Open New Window by the date specified in the "visit-certificate".

  • Please avoid making tentative and temporary reservations because it becomes troublesome by other eliminating applicants making legitimate reservations.

[Entry Ticket]

  • Entry tickets will be distributed on a first-come first-serve basis in front of the Front Gateat 8:00 a.m.
    Timing of the distribution depends on the situation of the queueing.
  • Ticket is four for the person received.
  • No age restriction for entry but tickets are required even for infants. Infants without tickets are not allowed to enter.
  • Visitors who come as a group must queue one by one.
    (One person queueing on behalf of a Group cannot receive entry tickets for all the group members, only one ticket will be issued.)

  • Large luggage such as suitcase cannot be brought in.
  • The period of accepting applications for visit for 4(Mon)July-4(Tue)October is closed.
  • A visit-certificate for those accepted
    For the visit during the period of 29(Thu)September to 4(Tue)October, we will send by e-mail a visit-certificate for those accepted on 18(Thu)August.
    In addition,please be advised that we do not send any noticed to those who were not accepted this time.

3.Japanese Style Annex (Limited numbers, Advance Application, Entry charge)

Enter through the West Gate.
You can visit the Japanese Style Annex with guided tour.
Timing of entry to the Japanese Style Annex is predetermined.
Apart from this entry timing, you can visit the Main Building of the Palace and Main Garden for the remaining time of a day.
Advance application through the internet web page is necessary.

[Opening Information]

Opening Time: The following six slots with guided tour (each about 40 minutes) are available.

Entry Gate: West Gate
Eligible person: Above the Junior High School age (those who were born before 1 April 2004).
  • Junior High School students (born between 2 April 2001 and 1 April 2004)must be accompanied by those who were born before 1 April 1997.
Maximum number of visitors: 20 persons per each slot.(120 persons a day)
Maximum number per application is 4 persons.
How to apply: The application is closed.
Entry charge: Adult: 1500 Yen, Junior high-school and high school students: 700 Yen

[Application results and notification]

  • We will send you a "visit-certificate" by e-mail once you are granted by one week before the visit day. Please be advised that sending an application does not automatically grant you a visit.
  • Only one application is valid for each day. More than one application by one person to each day will be treated as invalid.
  • After the completion of application process, any change such as the name of applicant cannot be accepted.
    Names which are not listed on the Acceptance of Visit will not be accepted including infants.
  • On the day of your visit, ID checking will be conducted at the Gate.
    Please be prepared to show the followings to the officials at the Gate:

    2. ID (Passport)
  • In case your application was incomplete or error, the application will be treated as invalid.
  • Information collected through processing applications will be used only for lottery result notification and ID checking on the day of the visit.
    They will not be used for any other purposes.

[Advisory Note]

  • Due to the structure of the building, a person with wheel chair or walking aide equipment(such as silver-car)cannot visit.
  • For security reasons, metal and baggage check will be conducted at the Gate.
  • No photo taking within the Annex for security reasons.
    Photo taking of the Annex from outside is allowed, but large size cameras for business purposes and related equipment such as camera stand is not allowed. Using extendable steel stick for self-portrait is not allowed.
  • No car/bicycle park facilities nearby the Palace. Recommend to use public transport.
  • Pets are not allowed.
