On September 6 and 7, 2017, Mr. Matsuyama, Minister of State for Science and Technology Policy and Space Policy, visited Vladivostok to attend the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) 2017 and meet with key figures in Russia. When Minister Matsuyama met Mr. Komarov, Director General of ROSCOSMOS, they discussed the two countries’ cooperation in space policy, including collaboration on the International Space Station. Meanwhile, Minister Matsuyama invited Mr. Komarov to the Second International Space Exploration Forum (ISEF2), scheduled to be held next March in Tokyo, and received his positive response.
On September 7, Minister Matsuyama met with Mr. Anisimov, interim President of Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU) and exchanged views on research cooperation between Japanese and Russian Universities. At FEFU, Minister Matsuyama also visited ICE (International Combustion and Energy) Laboratory, the site of joint research by Prof. Maruta of Tohoku University and Prof. Minaev of FEFU, who receive a large-scale research fund called "Mega Grant" from the Russian Ministry of Education and Science.
Minister Matsuyama also attended the Plenary Session of the EEF, during which Primate Minister Abe, Russian President Putin, South Korean President Moon, and Mongolian President Battulga delivered their speeches. At the Press Conference held afterwards, Minister Matsuyama stated that Japan would deepen its bilateral collaboration with Russia in the areas of S&T and space policy in an effort to further promote Japan STI policy.
