Signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation on the Area of Quantum Science and Technology between Japan and Denmark

1.Summary
On January 9, 2025, Mr. KIUCHI Minoru, Minister of State for Science and Technology Policy, Cabinet Office, signed the “Memorandum of Memorandum of Cooperation on the Area of Quantum Science and Technology between Japan and Denmark” with Ms. Christina Egelund, Minister for Higher Education and Science, during her visit to Japan.
2.Background
Quantum mechanics was developed by Dr. Niels Bohr of Denmark about 100 years ago, and in Japan, world-class basic research has been conducted on quantum mechanics, starting with Dr. NISHINA Yoshio of RIKEN, who studied under Dr. Bohr. In recent years, quantum technology has been attracting renewed attention as a technology that will revolutionize future industry and society, and investment in the practical application of quantum computers, quantum cryptography, quantum sensing, and other technologies has been intensifying around the world. Regarding Japan and Denmark, cooperation is still ongoing among various universities, research institutions, and so forth, including the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology and the Niels Bohr Institute. To further enhance the cooperative relationship between the two countries, Mr. Kiuchi and Ms. Egelund have signed this memorandum of cooperation.

Through this memorandum of cooperation, Japan and Denmark recognize that they are both leaders in quantum science and technologies and have strong and diversified science, technology, and innovation relations, with extensive collaborations between academia, industry, and government, in the following areas.
