Subject Permission of the use of ascorbic palmitate as a food additive, since it has earned high marks from the FAO/WHO Committee.
Details of Measures It was explained that the designation of a new food additive would require study and deliberation by the Food Sanitation Investigation Council, and that this study and deliberation would in turn be conducted based on information submitted on the additive's safety, effectiveness, and necessary. It was further pointed out that no applications had yet been received by the Council for the use of ascorbic palmitate.
At same time, reply was made that the safety evaluation by the FAO/WHO Expert Committee was used by individual countries, for possible reference and that this evaluation would be used by the Food Sanitation Investigation Council for its reference. It was further explained that even though the FAO/WHO Expert Committee is conducting assessments of food additive safety, it is up to each country to decide which food additives it will approve for use and that Japan is taking the FAO/WHO studies into account.
