Details of Measures | Ivory from elephants is covered by the Convent on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (the Washington Treaty), and its international handling is entrusted to the management of the countries signatory to the Convent. It was explained that the measures to ban the import of processed ivory from elephants as of June 16 were taken in consideration of international opinion and other factors to achieve the aims of the Convent. However, it was also explained that transitional measures would be adopted to, for example, ensure the continuity of business and non-discriminatory treatment. |
