Details of Measures | 1. On expanding the animal quarantine facilities, it was replied that efforts have been made since fiscal 1985 to expand the storage facilities over 10 and that further efforts will continue to be made in fiscal 1991 and beyond. 2. On increasing the number of Animal Quarantine officers, it was replied that efforts have been made every year to increase staff. In fiscal 1990, approval was received for 14 additional Animal Quarantine officers. Further efforts will be made in fiscal 1991 and beyond. 3. On the management of the quarantine facilities, it was replied that the priority is given to hogs and other breeding animals and that, although there is a need to coordinate the timing and port of entry for some items in order to ensure the most efficient use of the facilities, this is done in fairness. It was also explained that all countries which are able to ex-port livestock to Japan are treated in a non-discriminatory manner in the use of quarantine facilities and that there is no discrimination on the basis of nationality, type of livestock, or broker. |
