Subject | Revision of Standards for Veterinary Drug Residues | ||
Details of Measures | In Japan, sales of meat and other products that are found to contain antibiotics or synthetic antimicrobials in inspections are restricted because these veterinary drugs that are used in the process of raising livestock and farm-raised seafood may bring drug-resistant bacteria and cause a bacteria-changing disease, because they are not necessary for foodstuffs, and because the residue can be prevented by staying away from them. The case is now being studied under the FAO/WHO Joint Food Standards Program and Japan has also launched studies by establishing a task force comprised of experts. The government explained that Japan would conduct studies based on scientific grounds of individual substances, such as ADI, while giving consideration to the results of studies now being undertaken by the international organizations and other countries. The government additionally explained that, after the study, it will start the review and establish residue standards for veterinary drugs remaining in foodstuffs, that it asked the Food Sanitation Investigation Council, in January 1994, to investigate whether the guidelines should be applied to seven items, and that the Cabinet at a meeting in July the same year decided on the above policy. The Food Sanitation Investigation Council is now deliberating standards, with implementation scheduled by the end of fiscal 1995. |
