Subject | Review of the regulations regarding harmful substances in marzipan. | ||
Details of Measures | Japan has not banned the import of marzipan (a confection made by mixing almond flour and sugar) because it contained amygdalin (hydrocyanic acid). While inspections are conducted in that almond bitters used in the production of marzipan do contain cyanic compounds injurious to human health, no products have ever been declared in violation of the Food Sanitation Law as a result of such inspections. It was thus replied that this case probably arose because of a misunderstanding on the part of the exporter or importer. |
