Details of Measures | Importing plants with crop-damaging insects (such as Mediterranean fruit flies and codling moths) is banned in Japan. There are no reports on such insects in Japan, but, if brought into Japan, they may have far-reaching adverse impacts on Japanese agriculture. The government explained that, in order for Japan to reexamine the areas from which it bans imports of fresh fruits and vegetables, it is necessary to have data based on scientific researches showing that no such harmful insects exit. The government also made an additional explanation in September 1993 about one of the examples that led to Japan's lifting of the import ban in view of necessary procedures. In this example, imports of Dutch tomatoes and green peppers were permitted as long as they met certain conditions. |
