Subject | Review of handling of harmful insects with regard to cut flowers | ||
Details of Measures | As in other countries, Japan carries out a sample survey in plant quarantine and if a harmful insect is detected, the whole bunch of the flowers has to be processed because a considerable number of harmful insects are believed to exit in them in such a case. Even if the harmful insect detected is in the same shape as those found in Japan, it may differ in ecological characteristics, such as offensiveness and propagative power. The government, therefore, explained that such a harmful insect cannot be exempted from quarantine. The government also made additional explanations (September 1993) that many of the harmful insects detected in cut flowers and fresh plants are virus carriers and therefore may cause new damage to Japan but that the importation of such flowers and plants will be allowed after fumigation, etc. |
