Details of Measures | The Road Vehicles Law sets down standards for the safety of the structure and equipment of road vehicles and anti-pollution measures, and specific testing requirements and evaluation criteria for technical matters are laid down in the "Technical Standards for Safety Standards Relating to Road Vehicles." Vehicles which fail to meet these standards may not be operated. The government has heretofore-accepted foreign standards as equivalent to domestic standards when they are equivalent to or better functional standards in use in Japan. Recently, based on technical studies, it has been ascertained that, for example, FMVSS-105/83 standards of the United States (testing for sudden braking at 30 mph) and FMVSS108/76 (testing for license plate illumination) use the same testing methods as those for testing technical standards in Japan, and all concerned bodies were informed of this on June 11, 1991. The concerned ministry replied that in the future, all standards judged to be equivalent or better in functional terms would be accepted. |
