Details of Measures | The Road Vehicles Law sets down standards for the safety of the structure and equipment of road vehicles and anti-pollution measures. Vehicles which fail to meet these standards may not be operated. Safety standards for road vehicles require those ordinary vehicles 6 meters or more in length install rear side indicator lamps within 400 mm of the rear end of the vehicle. On the other hand, United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) 108 states that rear side indicator lamps shall be positioned as close to the rear of the vehicle as possible. In Europe, no special mention is made of this. From the viewpoint of international harmonization of standards, this matter is being discussed at the ECE.WP29 (United Nations Economic Council of Europe subcommittee on vehicle safety and pollution), and the ministry replied that international standards would be accepted as soon as these are adopted. The ECE.WP29 is expected to set out a distance within 1000 mm of the rear end of the vehicle as the position for rear side indicator lamps as the international standard in 1992. |
