Subject | Standards for use of food additives in carbonated drinks | ||
Details of Measures | To protect the nation's health, the Ministry of Health and Welfare decides whether to accept the use of food additives only after scientific testing to determine the usefulness, safety and need for the said additive, for each food for which application has been made. No request has ever been made to use potassium sorbic acid etc. as the food additive in carbonated drinks, and since the government has never conducted scientific testing on the usefulness, safety and need of this additive, at present it is not permitted to use the food additives potassium sorbic acid and over 30 ppm of sodium bisulfite. The complainant was advised that if they wish to use potassium sorbic acid, etc. as a food additive in carbonated drinks, they should submit data supporting the safety, usefulness and need for these food additives and apply to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, for study by the Food Sanitation Investigation Council. The complainant was also advised that the usage standards for food additives for all foreign countries are set out by type of food, in accordance with conditions in the respective countries. |
