Subject | Import approval of water purifiers temporarily using iodine compounds | ||
Details of Measures | Iodine compounds included in the water purifier in this complaint are classified as food additives, which are chemical components, under the Food Sanitation Law. Iodine compounds are currently not designated as food additives, and water purifiers using this cannot be imported. Accordingly, if the required application, accompanied by data on safety, usefulness, etc. is made, the iodine compound in question will be examined by the Food Sanitation Investigation Council The complainant was advised that at that time, the matter would probably be discussed from the perspective that the levels of iodine ingested by the Japanese public are already quite high by international standards. The complainant was also advised that the documentation attached to the application would be accepted if it dealt with tests carried out abroad and was accompanied by a reliable summary in Japanese, and given information on the process from application to designation. Further information was also given directly to the complainant concerning the specific procedure for applying for designation, to aid understanding. |
