Subject Approval for the import of processed foods using iodized salt
Details of Measures Under the Japanese Food Sanitation Law, no food additive may be permitted for distribution in the Japanese marketplace, unless the additive is designated by the Minister of Health and Welfare as not injurious to human health based on the opinion of the Food Sanitation Council.
Because the iodized salt is not designated additive under the same Law, the import of that additive is prohibited. Those who wish to import that additive into Japan must submit an application for its designation to the Minister, along with accompanying documents including data demonstrating safety and effectiveness.
Upon receiving request, the Council will thoroughly evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the additive on a scientific basis, after pre-examination by the Ministry's secretariat.
In evaluation, the iodine intake of Japanese people at moment will be taken into account, since the Japanese consume iodine at considerably high level, compared with other countries' people.
