Types of Decorations
The “Edict on the Establishment of Decorations and Service Medals” (Goverment Edict No.54) was issued in April 1875 (Meiji 8).
This became the basis for the Orders of the Rising Sun, which marked the beginning of the honors system in Japan. Subsequently, the Order of the Chrysanthemum was established in 1876 (Meiji 9), the Orders of the Sacred Treasure and of the Precious Crown were instituted in 1888 (Meiji21), and the Order of Culture was added in 1937 (showa 12).
