92.0% of the Japanese respondents said both of their parents were alive.
When compared to other countries, the country with the highest proportion of respondents having both parents was Sweden (94.5%). (Table 1-1)

92.0% of the Japanese respondents said that they were not married and 7.1% said that they were married (have a spouse now).
When compared with other countries, the country with the highest proportion of unmarried respondents was Korea (98.0%), followed by Japan. At the other extreme, the country with the highest proportion of married respondents is the U.S. The countries with the highest proportions of so-called "paperless marriages," where a man and a woman live together without being formally married, were Sweden (16.7%), followed by Germany (12.4%) and the U.S. (8.3%). (Table 1-2)

75.4% of the Japanese respondents said that they lived with their mothers (and/or their spouses' mothers), followed in descending order by 71% living with their fathers (and/or their spouses' fathers), 60.4% living with their siblings, and 22.5% with grandparents. 14.2% of the respondents said that they lived alone.

When compared with the previous survey, the proportion of the respondents living with their mothers (and/or their spouses' mothers) declined from 79.2% to 75.4%.

When compared with other countries, a large number of respondents in Japan and Korea indicated that they lived with their mothers (and/or their spouses' mothers), with their fathers (and/or their spouses' fathers), or with siblings. The number of respondents living with their grandparents was also high in Japan. On the other hand, in the U.S, Sweden, and Germany, the number of respondents living with their spouses (including partners) was high. In the U.S., the number of respondents living with their friend(s), roommate(s), or colleague(s) was high. The number of respondents living alone was high in Sweden and Germany. (Table 1-3)
