3. Satisfaction with family life

(1) Satisfaction with family life
Q10 How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with your family life? Please select one of the following answers.

In Japan, the proportion of the respondents who said that they were satisfied with their family life ('satisfied,' cited by 49.5%, and 'somewhat satisfied,' cited by 35.3%) was 84.8%; this was much higher than the proportion of the respondents who said that they were dissatisfied (13.1% ) (a combination of 'somewhat dissatisfied,' cited by 10.2% and 'dissatisfied,' cited by 3.0%). In comparison with other countries, Sweden was ranked first in the number of satisfied respondents with 94.3%; followed in descending order by the U.S. Germany, Japan and Korea. More than 80% of the respondents in every country indicated that they were 'satisfied' with family life. (Figure 1-5)

(2) Reasons for satisfaction with family life

Regarding the aspects of their family life with which respondents were satisfied, in Japan, 64.7% said that they were satisfied with the health of their family. It was then followed in descending order by 43.8% saying that they were satisfied with the amount of conflict or arguments among family members, 36.4% with the atmosphere and conversation at home, 35.1% with their relationship with their brothers and sisters, and 31.9% with the amount of understanding they received from their parents and/or their spouse/partner.
When compared with the figures taken in the last survey, the figures for the item 'the health of your family members' declined from 71.2% to 64.7% and so did the item 'the atmosphere and conversation at home' from 41.3% to 36.4%. In addition, the figures for the item 'getting along with your brother(s) and/or sister(s)' declined from 40.4% to 35.1%. On the other hand, the figures for the item 'the amount of understanding you receive from your parents and/or your spouse/partner' increased from 26.5% to 31.9%.
In comparison with the other countries, 'the health of your family,' which was ranked first in Japan, was also first in Korea and Germany. However, 'the amount of love you receive from your parents and/or your spouse/partner' was ranked first in the U.S. and 'environment of your neighborhood' in Sweden. 'The health of your family members,' 'the atmosphere and conversation at home' and ''getting along with your brother(s) and/or sister(s)' were ranked high in every country. (Table 1-6)
