1. Significance/satisfaction with school life

When asked about the significance of going to school, in Japan, 61.5% of the respondents said that it was to 'improve friendship,' followed in descending order by 'general and basic knowledge' (51.0%), 'better educational background and qualifications' (42.5%), 'specialized knowledge' (41.2%), and 'cultivate my talent' (27.9%).
In comparison with other countries, Japan was the only country where the option 'improve friendship' was cited most frequently. The most cited answer in the U.S. and Germany was 'general and basic knowledge.' In Korea, the top choice was 'better educational background and qualifications' and in Sweden, it was 'cultivate my talent.' The item 'work skills' ranked high in Korea, the U.S., and Sweden, and many American respondents chose "learn from the advice and good example of teachers.' (Table 2-4)

Regarding the satisfaction with student life, in Japan, 36.0% of the respondents said that they were 'satisfied' with school life and 42.6% said that they were 'somewhat satisfied,' meaning that a total of 78.6% were satisfied to some extent. This figure was much higher than the total for 'dissatisfaction,' cited by 19.5% (combined figures of 'somewhat dissatisfied (13.7%)' and 'dissatisfied (5.8%)').
In comparison with other countries, Germany had the highest satisfaction rate, followed in descending order by Sweden, the U.S., Japan and Korea. (Figure 2-1)
