To the question, "what is important when you are seeking employment?", 'job description' was ranked top of the list in Japan at 66.6%, followed in descending order by 'earnings' (64.9%), 'hours of work' (44.9%), 'atmosphere of workplace' (44.3%), and 'ease of commuting' (38.1%).
In comparison with other countries, 'earnings' was the first choice in Korea, the U.S., and Germany. In Sweden, it was 'atmosphere of workplace.' 'Easy of commuting' was ranked high in Japan, 'future prospects' was high in Korea, 'opportunities to further your skills' was high in U.S., 'opportunities to realize your potential' was high in Sweden, and 'stability of the business' and 'opportunities to further your skills' were high in Germany. (Table 3-4)

(2) Promotion and salary increase

When asked how promotions and salary increases should be decided, 62.1% of the Japanese respondents emphasized performance saying that it should be mainly or solely on 'job performance' (option 3 (49.7%) and 4 (12.4%)), and 'seniority-oriented system' (option 1 (3.6%) and 2 (25.8%)) accounted for 29.7%.
When looking at the changes over the years, it was found the percentage of 'seniority-oriented system' tended to decrease, whereas that of 'performance-oriented system' tended to increase. (Figure 3-4)

Looking at the other countries surveyed, the performance-oriented system (options 3 and 4) was more popular than the seniority-oriented system (choices 1 and 2) in all of the countries. The percentage of the respondents who chose 'solely based on performance' was high in Germany and the U.S. In Korea, the gap between those who favored the performance-oriented system (52.0%) and those who favored the seniority-oriented system (45.3%) was rather narrow.
