In Japan, the majority of the respondents (65.9%) said that they spent their free time 'with friends.' Other popular answers included: 'relaxing, watching TV, reading magazines' (52.5%), 'shopping, going to malls' (32.6%), 'doing nothing in particular, just taking it easy' (31.9%), and 'reading books, listening to music' (27.7%).
When compared to the previous survey, the number of respondents who chose 'shopping, going to malls' declined from 41.9% to 32.6% and those who chose 'reading books, listening to music' also declined from 35.5% to 27.7%. (Table 5-2)

Looking at the other countries surveyed, the top choice of each country was 'spending with friends'. 'Going to movies, plays, concerts, museums, or sports events' was ranked high in Korea, the U.S., and Germany. 'Spending time with a boyfriend or girlfriend' was ranked high in Korea and Germany. 'Spend time on PC or use the Internet' was high in Korea. In Sweden and Germany, 'Going to discos, Karaoke, pinball games or game centers' was listed high. (Table 5-3)
