In Japan, 64.6% of the respondents answered that the fact that 'it is difficult to find a job, and many people are unemployed' was a problem with society. This was followed in descending order by 'the political system is flawed' (43.7%), 'there are discrepancies in income and occupation among people with different educational backgrounds' (40.7%), 'social welfare for the elderly and the handicapped is not enough' (34.5%), and 'people are indifferent to the destruction of the environment' (31.7%).
When compared with the last survey, the percentage of the respondents answering that the problem was 'difficulty to find a job and many people are unemployed' increased from 40.3% to 64.6%. The percentage of the following items declined in this survey: 'the political system is flawed' (48.8%
43.7%), 'there are discrepancies in income and occupation among people with different educational backgrounds' (52.2%
40.7%), 'social welfare for the elderly and the handicapped is not enough' (40.9%
34.5%), and 'people are indifferent to the destruction of the environment' (42.9%

When compared with other countries, 'it is difficult to find a job, and many people are unemployed,' which ranked first in Japan, also ranked first in Germany. The first choices of other countries were 'there are discrepancies in income and occupation among people with different educational backgrounds' in Korea, and 'people are discriminated against by races' in the U.S. and Sweden. Items ranked high included: 'things that should be done are not always done' in the U.S., Sweden and Germany; 'there is too much difference in income between the wealthy and the poor' in Korea, the U.S. and Germany; 'too much importance is placed on one's social status and family background' in Korea and the U.S.; 'those who work diligently are not rewarded' and 'people are discriminated against by sex' in Sweden; 'morals are weak' in the U.S. (Table 6-6)
