In Japan, almost the same number of respondents said "yes" (29.5%) and "no" (30.2%) to the statement; "if a product is manufactured taking environmental concerns into consideration, I will buy that product even if it is more expensive.' Looking at the other countries, more respondents in Korea, the U.S. and Sweden said that they would buy a product of the environment-friendly manufacture. In Germany and Japan, the respondents were equally split between those who would buy environment-friendly products and those who would not. (Figure 8-1a)

In Japan, more respondents said 'no' (37.2%) when they were asked if they would accept higher taxes to protect the environment rather than saying 'yes' (33.3%). Meanwhile, the number of respondents who said 'can't say' was rather high (25.8%).
Looking at the other countries surveyed, more respondents in Korea, the U.S. and Sweden said 'yes' when they were asked if they would accept higher taxes to protect the environment rather than saying 'no'; whereas in Germany and Japan the proportion was vice versa. (Figure 8-1b)
