When being asked about cellular phones (including PHS), the most frequently cited answer in Japan was the 'frequent use of e-mail' (57.7%), followed in descending order by 'closer relationship with friends' (42.9%), 'hard to imagine a life without a cell-phone' (40.9%), 'expansion of the social circle' (37.1%), and 'gives my family peace of mind' (33.4%).
Looking at the other countries surveyed, the most German respondents said they used e-mail frequently. The items ranked top in Korea were 'closer relationship with friends,' while 'gives my family peace of mind' was the top answer in both the U.S. and Sweden. Also ranking high in the U.S. was 'I do not own a cellular phone (including PHS).' (Table 8-1)
